Occupation of Belgrade Fortress (1787-1792 Ottoman-Austrian, Russian Wars)

The Ottoman Empire declared war against Russia in 1787 in order to save the Crimea from Russia, but Austria, which made a secret alliance with Russia, was involved in the war. During this period, the Ottoman-Austrian battles were fought in the Dniester and most especially in the Danube river basins. One of these battle fronts was Belgrade. Belgrade had a strategic importance as a gateway to the Central European border on the Austrian border. One of the biggest aims of Austria in these wars was to take over this city. Preparations were made by Austria before the occupation, military concentration were made and Serbs who were indigenous to the region were provoked to rebel against the Ottoman rule. Although the Ottoman Empire took sufficient precautions in the fortress, the guards and commanders assigned to the fortress and area, did not show the necessary commitment. As a result of this, the fortress was besieged and then delivered to Austria in October 1789.
