This article opens a series of articles on the study of uniforms and equipment of Plastun Cossacks in the second half of the 19th — early 20th Centuries. Its topic is the Başlık, a simple but important element of the Cossack uniform, a protection in bad weather. The article analyzes its cut, role in the costume and the history of its use by the North Caucasus Cossack units. Recommendations for its reproduction for historical reenactment are also provided.
