The article provides a brief analysis of biographical works by Dmitri Bantysh-Kamensky, based on contemporary estimates. Bantysh-Kamensky’s biographical analytical reviews and collections of stories about famous Russian historians constitute an important part of his academic heritage, which gained him wide fame. In fact, these works were one of the first Russian topic-based biographical collections of stories, based on rich and various factual materials, collected and introduced by the researcher into the academic circulation. Written in a clear, comprehensible and faithful manner, in a living literary language, the works by Bantysh-Kamensky had a large circulation, which made them very popular with non-specialist audience, who wanted to learn more about life and activity of famous Russian commanders, ministers, diplomats, and writers. D. Bantysh-Kamensky’s biographical sketches were original works that considerably promoted public interest in history studies.
