Technological Transformation of the Infantry Shovel: A Historical Analysis

The object of the study is the development of an individual entrenching tool. The subject of the study is the influence of the features of the use of individual entrenching tools and the development of technologies on the change in the design of a small infantry shovel. One of the important elements of a serviceman's equipment is a portable entrenching tool — a small infantry shovel. The history of this tool goes back a century and a half. In 1869, Captain Mads Linneman of the Danish army patented a version of the infantry shovel M.1870, which is a shortened version of the entrenching shovel, optimized in size and weight for the individual needs of an infantryman. Over the century and a half of the history of the infantry shovel, a fairly large number of different modifications of these products have been developed and accepted for supply: both successful ones, which were developed in subsequent samples of the entrenching tool, and unsuccessful ones, which were not developed. Successful changes include the emergence of folding versions of shovels, which gave rise to a new direction in the development of this tool. The article examines the features of classic and folding shovels, a comparative assessment of their advantages and disadvantages, their influence on the development of a fighter's equipment, both in historical retrospect and in modern times.
