The work explores to the analysis of the activities of the Academic Publishing House “Researcher”, the largest in the South of Russia center of historical research, independent of traditional research institutes. Special attention is paid Special attention is paid to the organization of slavery research by the head of this publishing house A. A. Cherkasov. The author shows, that A. A. Cherkasov organized the publication of the first journal devoted mainly to the problems of slavery in the Caucasus and organized a thematic scientific competition. Although the results of the work of this scientist are not devoid of shortcomings, his dynamism and readiness for risky historical projects allowed him to organize around him a stable circle of scientists studying slavery in the Caucasus in the 19th century.
