Semantic Analysis of N.I. Dubilet's Article “The Unparalleled Feat of the Red Sailors”

The theme of “death barges” was popular in Soviet literature. Not only did it reflect the tragic events of the Civil War, but it also created a powerful propaganda image symbolizing the ruthlessness and cruelty of the Whites, on the one hand, and the unbending will of the Red prisoners, on the other. This study draws on an article by the renowned Perm journalist and writer N.I. Dubilet, who wrote several works about Kama rivermen, “The Unparalleled Feat of the Red Sailors”, published in the newspaper “Bolshaya Kama” in 1968. The primary method used was semantic analysis, quantitative measurements of which were performed using the Advego software package. The large number of unique and meaningful words indicates the author's rich vocabulary and characterizes him as a skilled journalist and writer. This rich vocabulary was used both to enhance the emotional impact on the reader and to create the illusion of depth of analysis. The significant number of “stop words” and the high percentage of empty words indicate the constant repetition of the same idea with slight variations to ensure maximum impact in the reader's mind. Overall, the semantic analysis points to the formation of a negative image of white people and the justification of their own actions in the eyes of the audience.
