The article deals with the significance of taverns among people living in rural and urban society in the Hetmanate period of the XVIII century. The author tries to investigate the ambiguous attitude of the Ukrainians to taverns, and first of all their entertainment functions and asocial influence on behavioral strategies of humanity: increasing of fist fights, obscene language, gambling and heavy drinking; demonstrate the multiplicity of taverns; reveal some rules and regulations used to control taverns; explain the specific features of distillery and focus special attention on uncontrollable consumption of alcoholic drinks.
